What is gum disease and how to prevent it

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems we see at Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic. It affects the tissues that support your teeth and, if ignored, can lead to serious complications—including tooth loss.

The good news? With the right care and early action, gum disease is largely preventable and often reversible.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) refers to inflammation or infection in the gums and surrounding tissues. It typically develops in two stages:

Gingivitis (Early Stage)

This is the mildest form. Your gums may look red, feel tender, and bleed when brushing or flossing. The key point: gingivitis is reversible.

Periodontitis (Advanced Stage)

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. This stage affects the bone supporting your teeth and may lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss.

How Common Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is extremely common. In fact, around 95% of adults experience gingivitis at some point in their lives.

That might sound worrying, but here’s the reassuring part—most cases are preventable with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

What Causes Gum Disease?

The main cause is plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth.

If you don’t remove plaque daily, it can:

  • Irritate your gums
  • Cause inflammation and bleeding
  • Harden into tartar (which only a dental professional can remove)

Over time, this leads to more serious gum problems.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Catching gum disease early makes treatment much easier. Look out for:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A bad taste in your mouth
  • Receding gums or loose teeth

If your gums are bleeding, don’t ignore it. Gums shouldn’t bleed—it’s your mouth’s way of asking for help.

What Should You Do If You Notice Symptoms?

Act early. Book a dental check-up as soon as possible.

At Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic, we will:

  • Assess your gum health
  • Take X-rays if needed
  • Create a personalised treatment plan

Early treatment is simpler, quicker, and more comfortable.

Treatment Options for Gum Disease

Treatment depends on how advanced the condition is.

For Gingivitis

  • Professional cleaning
  • Improved brushing and flossing habits

For Periodontitis

  • Deep cleaning (scale and polish or root surface debridement)
  • Ongoing care with a dental hygienist or specialist

The aim is always to remove bacteria, reduce inflammation, and protect your teeth.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

Prevention is far easier than treatment—and it doesn’t need to be complicated.

Daily Oral Care

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes
  • Use fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth (floss or interdental brushes)
  • Consider an antimicrobial mouthwash

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

  • Stop smoking (your gums will thank you)
  • Manage conditions like diabetes
  • Reduce stress where possible

Consistency is key. Your gums prefer routine—not occasional bursts of enthusiasm

Are Some People More at Risk?

Smoking

Yes, some factors increase your risk of gum disease:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Genetics
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Stress

If you fall into one of these categories, regular dental visits become even more important
