The Dental Implant Process

If you are considering dental implants, it helps to understand the journey from consultation to final crown. At Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic, we follow a clear, structured process to ensure safe treatment, predictable outcomes, and natural-looking results.

Here is what you can expect at each stage of your implant treatment.

Initial Consultation

Your implant journey begins with a detailed consultation.

During this appointment, we:

  • Carry out a full clinical examination
  • Review your dental and medical history
  • Assess your gum health
  • Discuss your concerns and smile goals
  • Explain treatment options and timelines

This is your opportunity to ask questions and understand whether dental implants are the right solution for you. We will outline the full process, expected healing time, and costs involved.

If you decide to proceed, we schedule your next appointment for detailed planning records.

Records Appointment – Scans & Impressions

Dental intra oral scan

Once you confirm you would like to go ahead, we arrange a dedicated planning appointment.

At this visit, we take:

  • Digital impressions or scans for study models and your future prosthesis
  • An OPG or CBCT scan to assess bone volume and anatomy

The CBCT scan allows us to evaluate your bone density and identify important anatomical structures such as nerves and sinuses. This technology ensures precise implant positioning and long-term stability.

Accurate planning is key to successful dental implant treatment.

Hygienist Appointment

Healthy gums are essential before placing a dental implant.

You will attend a hygienist appointment to:

  • Professionally clean your teeth
  • Remove plaque and tartar
  • Assess and improve gum health
  • Receive personalised oral hygiene advice

Strong, healthy gums significantly reduce the risk of implant

Implant Placement

Dental Implacement

We place the dental implant under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

During the appointment:

  • We gently position the titanium implant into your jawbone
  • We fit a healing collar (healing abutment)

The healing collar helps shape the gum tissue as it heals. This creates a natural contour for your future crown or bridge.

The procedure is carefully planned using your scans. Most patients experience only mild discomfort afterwards, which settles quickly.

Healing & Osseointegration

After implant placement, your body begins the healing process.

Over the next 8–16 weeks, the implant fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This forms a strong and stable foundation for your new tooth.

We may review you during this healing phase to ensure everything progresses well.

Crown or Bridge Fitting

Once healing is complete, we begin the final restorative stage.

We take precise impressions or digital scans to create your custom-made crown or bridge. Your restoration will:

  • Match your natural teeth
  • Restore full chewing function
  • Blend seamlessly with your smile

We then securely fit your crown or bridge. The result looks natural and feels secure.

Yearly Review & Implant Maintenance

Dental implants require ongoing care.

We recommend:

  • Annual implant reviews
  • Clinical assessment of gum health
  • X-rays when required
  • Regular hygienist visits

With proper maintenance and good oral hygiene, dental implants can last for many years.
