Does a Root Canal Hurt? Separating Myth from Reality

If you have been told you need a root canal, you may have felt a little nervous. Many people immediately think of pain. Root canals often have a reputation for being one of the most uncomfortable dental procedures. The truth, however, is very different.

At Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic, we hear this concern from patients all the time. The good news is that modern dentistry has changed the root canal experience completely. In most cases, the procedure feels no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

Let’s separate the myths from the reality.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal treatment saves a tooth that has become infected or badly damaged. Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp. This pulp contains nerves and blood vessels.

When bacteria reach the pulp, infection can develop. This often causes pain, swelling, or sensitivity. If left untreated, the infection can spread and eventually lead to tooth loss.

During a root canal, your dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection. The goal is simple: remove the source of pain and save your natural tooth.

Myth: Root Canals Are Extremely Painful

This is the most common myth surrounding root canal treatment. Many people still imagine root canals as painful procedures.

In reality, modern root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it.

At Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic, we use local anaesthetic to completely numb the area before treatment begins. Most patients say the procedure feels similar to having a routine filling.

Advances in dental technology, instruments, and techniques mean treatment is now quicker and far more comfortable than in the past.

Reality: The Infection Causes the Pain

The discomfort people associate with root canals usually comes before treatment.

An infected tooth can cause:

  • Persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Pain when chewing

A root canal removes the infected tissue that is causing these symptoms. Many patients actually feel immediate relief once the infection is treated.

During the procedure, your dentist will:

  • Numb the tooth and surrounding area
  • Carefully remove the infected pulp
  • Clean and disinfect the root canals
  • Fill and seal the tooth

You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel pain.

After treatment, mild tenderness can occur for a few days. This is normal and usually settles quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief is typically enough to manage it.

Why Saving Your Tooth Matters

A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth. This helps maintain your bite, chewing ability, and overall oral health.

Without treatment, the infection may worsen. In many cases, the only alternative would be removing the tooth.

Saving the tooth is almost always the best long-term solution.
